Applications due by COB or 5pm on each due date. \n  \nAbout PATHS Enhanced Funding Opportunity\nPATHS is committing funds (approximately $30\,000 per year) to support PATHS Partners to enhance existing programs and/or events with authentic engineering and NASA-related resources\, experiences\, or activities for students and their teachers. We invite requests in the range of $250 to $5000 to enhance your existing activities in support of the overall goal of the PATHS coalition: to broaden participation in engineering in Massachusetts and develop multiple pathways for engineering students to succeed by enhancing the supportive culture of a broad coalition of partners. \nApplication deadlines are January 1\, April 1\, July 1\, October 1 of each year to allow for a variety of program/event planning timelines. We are looking to add funding to existing events or programs. The funding for those programs should already be secured. These funds are to be used to increase diversity\, increase participation of BIPOC participants or their teachers\, or to make engineering components more effective (better speakers\, materials\, or activities). Funding is not to be used for general operating expense\, staff planning time\, or room rentals. DESCRIPTION:Come see what model rocketry is all about!\nIn celebration of Mass STEM week\, the JP Rocketeers\, in collaboration with New England Sci-Tech (www.nescitech.org) will be holding an intro/ demo model rocketry launch in Acton\, MA on Friday October 21 from roughly 3:30 to 5:30pm. You are cordially invited\, and please feel free to extend an invitation to anyone else who may be interested. The address is 343-347 School Street\, Acton 01720.\n\nThis informal outdoor program is designed specifically for those who have had little or no exposure to model rocketry\, or those who have some experience but seek guidance and information about how to progress as a model rocketeer. Our goal with this public demo launch is to introduce newcomers to the exciting world of model rocketry\, which has provided generations of young people with the thrill of building and launching (and with experience\, designing!) your very own rocket. Countless students who were exposed to model rocketry as kids go on to become aerospace engineers\, mathematicians\, physicists\, astronomers\, and other specialists in STEM fields. The fact that MIT has its own rocketry team speaks to the relevance of model rocketry in the field of engineering.\n\nWeather permitting\, we plan to launch a variety of rockets (in terms of size and design)\, with different recovery systems\, including parachute\, streamer\, glider\, and spin. We will provide an overview of materials and glues used for construction\, how a rocket is prepped for launch\, and safety procedures. SUMMARY:Engineering Workshop and Mentoring Program
DESCRIPTION:Offered by PATHS partner Massachusetts Science and Engineering Fair (MSEF) \nFor: Middle School and High School Teachers  \nFall 2022  (Register now for a fall workshop\, specific dates TBD -please ignore dates and times for event listing) \nJoin MSEF staff and collaborating teachers to dive into best practices to support student investigations using a real-world example to launch student-led independent science fair projects\, with a focus on the engineering process. The workshop will progress from ideation and research\, planning and prototypes\, testing\, to communicating results and significance. Videos\, articles\, and primary sources will be available from STEM professionals to aid investigations and demonstrate practical applications of STEM. Grade-band specific materials will provide teachers with actionable tools for implementation in the fall.  \nMSEF will connect teachers with mentors and each other through an on-line Google Classroom platform of 1 introductory module and 4 interactive modules featuring:  \n\n tools to use in your classroom \n case-study to practice implementation \n on-line discussion \n webinars (watch live or recorded) \n mentoring sessions (synchronous and asynchronous) \n\nPDPs for 20 workshop hours provided in partnership with STEMTeachers MassBay upon completion of the workshop. There will be 1 introductory and 4 interactive modules with two assignments per module. SUMMARY:Recognition and Reckoning: Empowering Men of Color through Equity and Cultural Wealth
DESCRIPTION:June 1-3\, 2022\nMen of color bring unique strengths and assets to higher education\, but they also face specific and complex barriers. Our institutions have struggled to support these men because we’ve focused on “fixing the students” instead of addressing the institutional\, systemic\, and structural barriers embedded in higher education that undermine their success. Re-envisioning our institutions as spaces designed to support and empower men of color will require a radical and honest reevaluation of who we are and what we do. \nThis year’s Institute will center on the cultural wealth of men of color and apply an equity-minded lens to our own institutions. This three-day experience will feature local and national scholars\, artists\, and activists. June 1 and 2 will be held virtually and provide immersive and engaging breakout sessions\, hands-on workshops\, and critical reflection and networking opportunities. SUMMARY:MA Science & Engineering Fair Seeking Volunteer Judges
DESCRIPTION:Every year thousands of students across the Commonwealth participate in science fair projects. MSEF is the non-profit organization that has proudly coordinated the State Fair since 1949. More than a competition\, students are thrilled with the experience of interacting with professionals and showcasing their work. Through the process students hone their critical thinking skills\, learn through both successes and failure\, and help solve local and global challenges. The Fair is the showcase\, celebrating both the journey and the project completion. \nWe are currently recruiting judges across STEM fields for the Massachusetts Science & Engineering Fair in May. Judging is virtual again this year with live\, scheduled interaction with students on our on-line platform. We are specifically looking for judges in engineering\, computer science and math on May 6th. \nOne of our partners recently shared her experience as a judge:  \nLast year I was a 1st time volunteer judge for the MSEF Science & Engineering Fair.  Being held remotely due to the virus I found the process MSEF put together for everyone was easy to use and about as close one could get to meeting in person as the interaction between the students and judges was seamless. It was amazing to see what the students could accomplish in both teams and individually while everyone was forced to work remotely.   \nAs an Engineer with many years of industry experience\, it’s both exciting and eye opening to see the variety of topics students are investigating and how they’re working together to accomplish project goals.  After looking through some of this years’ entries\, I’m starting to view my participation as a privilege for me to experience the future of STEM working at this level.  \nSee the flyer here\, feel free to share. \nPlease reach out to judginginfo@scifair.com with questions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:The Boston University Initiative on Cities is co-hosting the UMass Boston Department of Urban Planning and Community Development’s 7th Annual Spring Planning Lecture. This year’s speaker will be Dr. Laura Harjo\, who is a Myskoke scholar and an Associate Professor of Native American Studies at the University of Oklahoma. \n\n\nProfessor Harjo will discuss the rich history of sustainable community-building and place-making among Native American communities in North American highlighting what planners can learn from these experiences. \nProfessor Harjo earned her PhD in Geography at the University of Southern California. She previously served on the faculty at the University of New Mexico before join­ing the University of Oklahoma. Her most recent book\, Spiral to the Stars\, published by the University of Arizona employs Myskoke epistemologies and indigenous feminist ideas to enhance urban planning practice and pedagogy. \nThis event is co-hosted with the Hubert H.
